St
John-In-The-Wilderness Church - Mallital (Shukhatal)
|
|
|
|
It is one of the earliest buildings erected in Nainital and
possibly the finest church in any Indian Hill station. The church
was named by the bishop of Calcutta who came to Nainital in
1844, when the place was still very much a wilderness. This
church contains a brass memorial to the victims of famous landslip.
Bodies of few victims were buried in the graveyard here. |

Golu Devata is thought to be as an incarnation of Gaur Bhairav
(Shiva), and is worshipped all over the region and regarded
as the dispenser of justice by the devotees with extreme faith.
Historically, he is considered as the brave son and General
of Katyuri king, Jhal Rai and his mother was Kalinka, and his
grandfather was Hal Rai and great grandfather was Hal Rai. Historically
the origin of Golu Devata is accepted at Champawat. His mother
Kalinka is believed to be the sister of two other local deities
Harishchand Devjyun (the divine spirit of Raja Harish of the
Chands) and Sem Devjyun and both these deities are regarded
as uncles of Lord Golu.
There are many temples of Golu Devata in Kumaun, and the most
popular are at Chitai, Champawat, Ghorakhal. It is the popular
belief that Golu Devata dispense quick justice to the devotee.

On the Nainital - Almora Road , 9 Km from Bhowali and 17 Kms
from Nainital is a modern pilgrim centre. This place has achieved
recognition owing to the ashram of the famous Neem Karoli Maharaj.
Kaichi is a term used for two sharp hairpin bends of the motor
road in local dialect hence the name. It has no relation with
scissors.
Founded by the famous Maharaj Neem Karoli Baba and is very well
maintained and kept neat and clean. The concept of this place
came into existence in 1942 when Maharaj Neem Karoli along with
Shri Poornanand of the Kainchi Village proposed building an
Ashram here dedicated to Sombari Maharaj and Sadhu Premi Baba
who used to perform yagnas in this very place. Later in 1962,
their dream materialised and the forest from this area was cleared
and a rectangular platform was constructed. After due permission
from the Forest Conservator, Maharaj Ji acquired the lease of
this land and constructed a Temple devoted to Lord Hanuman over
that rectangular platform and adjacent to it is the Kainchi
Temple and an Ashram built for devotees. There is also a cave
beside the temple where Baba Neem Karoli used to spend his time
praying and is considered a sacred area. |
