Kathgodam :- "The Gateway of Kumaon Hills" is situated at the foothills
of Himalayas in Nainital District, is the terminus of the broad gauge
line of North East Railways connecting Nainital with Delhi, Dehradun & Howarah

History of Kathgodam Kathgodam means Kath = wood and Godam = depot, timber depot the importance of this place grew rapidly after it was brought on the Railway map of British India in 1909 and in the early 1900s it was a hamlet with less than 400 people. It grew to be a stop over town, when railways were laid down in the early 19th century by the british. In 1942, the Haldwani - Kathgodam Municipal Council was founded and is still the second largest Municipal Council in the state after Haridwar. The railway line was extended to Haldwani in 1884 and even today, it is the last railway station to Kumaon region and is the base station for visiting Nainital and other hills. Tracing the history of this region, the 14th century Mughal history mentions Gyan Chand belonging to the Chand dynasty, who was awarded the Bhabhar Terai region till the Ganges River, from the Delhi Sultanate.
